The StairCraft Awards are an opportunity for the Stairbuilders and Manufacturers Association to recognize the individual achievements of its members and to elevate industry standards.

The 2021 winners were announced at the group’s annual conference, held Sept. 23-25 in Denver.

“Participation in the StairCraft Awards competition was high this year. We had 51 entries submitted for judging by their peers,” says SMA executive director Terra Erb.

“The most entries are received in the Best Straight, Modern Stairway category and it’s exciting to see the various materials used in the projects, including wood, steel, glass, iron and even LED lighting. As homebuilding trends become more modern, so do the stairways. Therefore, this category continues to see high levels of entrants.”

The contest began in 2008 as a way for SMA members to showcase their work. Projects are judged by fellow members on aesthetics, safety, workmanship, and technical challenge. All contestants compete anonymously. Each entrant has certified that the entry met the code as enforced in the project’s local jurisdiction.

There are 11 categories, plus the People’s Choice and Best in Show awards.
