Furniture maker Thomas Dumke of Thomas William Furniture in Oconomowoc, Wis. has once again been selected to exhibit at the 38th annual Smithsonian Craft Show, scheduled for April 23-26 at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. Dumke attended in 2017 and 2019 as well.
“I am excited and honored to be accepted into the prestigious Smithsonian Craft Show, this is my third time,” says Dumke. “There are many fine crafts people who apply to this show.”
Dumke, who will exhibit his 2020 collection, is one of the 121 fine-art craft artists chosen from more than 1,000 applications. Artists in various medium categories were selected to participate throughout a highly competitive jury review process by a experts in the visual arts.
Dumke makes Shaker inspired solid wood furniture that is described as traditional with a modern flair. He also is influenced with a deep respect for the furniture craftsmen of the 17th and 18th centuries.
“Their knowledge of form, balance, joinery and of wood movement is evident in the pieces of fine furniture that still exist today,” he says.
The artist categories include furniture, wood, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, basketry, ceramics, decorative fibers, paper and wearable.
Other furniture exhibitors include Martin Zelonky, Christina Vincent, Thomas Throop, John Spivey, Paul Monfredo, Nancy McCormick, Roy Livingston, Richard Judd, Robert and Torr Erickson, Kevin Costello, and John Cameron.
