Even plywood gets its moment of fame from time to time, thanks to a recent contest hosted through a partnership between Rockler Woodworking and Hardware and The Modern Maker Podcast.

The Rockler Plywood Challenge – known as #RocklerPlywoodChallenge in social media speak – invited participants to make something using one sheet of plywood and then post their entry on Instagram.

The top three winning pieces were announced in June and, obviously, impressed the judges: Chris Salomone and Mike Montgomery of Modern Builds, and Ben Uyeda of HomeMade Modern, Rockler’s content partners.

This Standup Paddleboard by PC Makes placed third.

“I think I speak for Mike and Ben when I say we were absolutely floored by the quality and the quantity of participation that this challenge garnered. And when I think about the thought and execution that went into some of these projects, it blows my mind,” Salomone said in a statement.

This bentwood chair by Sami Chi took second.

“It’s as if every participant challenged themselves to transform a basic building material into a work of art,” said Nathan Ensminger, Rockler’s marketing manager. “Building something from a single sheet of plywood might sound simple, but the projects shared by the community were anything but basic.”
