Packing it in

I have a lot of shop work coming up, but none of it will take place in my shop. So, I have to take my shop with me.

Remember that table my sister-in-law wanted me to laminate? Well, my wife finally talked her out of it for the reasons I noted in that earlier blog. I was off the hook! But, because I am the stupidest person on the face of the Earth, I mentioned an alternate idea to my wife: I opined that it would be possible to laminate a floating top for that table, attached with bolts through slotted holes allowing the table underneath to expand and contract with seasonal movement. She went straight to her sister, but I never thought she’d go for it.

She did, of course, so I’m stuck with the task.

But this table is at a Cape Hatteras beach house, with the nearest home center nearly two hours away. That means I have to take not only everything I’ll need – including a rolled up 4x8 sheet of laminate –but everything I think I might possibly need, just in case. Fortunately, I ordered the sheet goods for the floating top and it will be delivered to the local management company of the beach house so it’ll be waiting for me when I get there.

But I don’t have a very big car for everything else I need to take, so I’m spending an inordinate amount of time figuring out the best way to get everything in. I’ve created a staging area in my shop, and have been stacking things in what I hope are logical piles corresponding to what order everything is going to get shoved into that vehicle.

But those piles keep getting bigger, and bigger. By the time we get rolling, I have no idea what the inside of the car will look like, or how much stuff my wife is going to have to hold in her lap. On the other hand, if I just leave her behind maybe I could just put more stuff in the passenger seat…
