A collapsing economy, combined with further deterioration of the housing market, continues to suppress remodeling activity, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. The Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) points to homeowner improvement spending declining at an annual rate of 12.1 percent by the third quarter of 2009.

The debut of the Fine Furnishings & Fine Craft Show in Baltimore is scheduled for May 2-3 at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center complex. The show is produced by Karla Little of KL Communications, who is also director of two other Fine Furnishings & Fine Craft Shows in Providence, R.I., and Milwaukee.

Attendance was lower than expected at the 22nd annual TSI Carolinas Industrial Woodworking Expo, but not bad considering the economy, according to the show’s producers. Held Feb. 19-20 at the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum Complex, the show featured 107 contracted exhibiting companies, with over 500 exhibiting personnel, offering new technology, products and services, and educational seminars.

The third annual Philadelphia Invitational Furniture Show is scheduled for March 27-29 at the Philadelphia Cruise Ship Terminal. The show will feature a limited group of furniture and furnishings artisans selected by jury to show their work and meet with present and prospective clients. Director Josh Markel expects a turnout of about 65 exhibitors and approximately 2,500 attendees, and encourages artisans to exhibit in the economic downturn.
