The third annual Philadelphia Invitational Furniture Show, held March 27-29 at the Philadelphia Cruise Ship Terminal, experienced a higher turnout compared to previous years, despite the slumping economy.

AWFS fair on course despite tough times

While there’s no clear indication of how fast the woodworking industry is going to rebound from the recession, AWFS fair management has a positive outlook that things are headed in the right direction. This is illustrated by the handful of new features and programs they’ve implemented that represent industry trends ranging from green themes to shop automation.

Two million acres set to be preserved

President Obama signed legislation March 30 designating more than two million acres in nine states as federal wilderness. The Omnibus Public Lands Management Act also preserves 1,000 miles of wild and scenic rivers.

Companies unveil NexGen machinery event

Through a joint organizational effort between two industry players, a new type of event has emerged. Biesse America and Stiles Machinery have announced the inaugural NexGen 2009, scheduled for June 8-13. The weeklong event, designed to showcase the breadth of technology offered by the companies, will take place in each of the manufacturers’ North Carolina showrooms — Biesse in Charlotte and Stiles in High Point and Gastonia.
