Concept: The history of creating pictures using the natural colors of wood can be traced to the tombs of the Egyptians. In the mid-16th century, Italian craftsmen used marquetry is a way to embellish furniture and create trompe l’oeil environments. This workshop is an opportunity to explore an ancient art form that has many contemporary applications.
Media & Techniques: Wood veneers. Marquetry: tools; materials and design; resawing of solid wood into veneers; commercial veneers; scroll and fret saw techniques; inlay, sand shading and finishing; glue-up; adhesives; vacuum and veneer press techniques; and methods for curved shapes.
Activitiess: Lectures, demonstrations and hands-on practice. Students will work on projects using various sawing techniques and materials, from initial drawings to artwork to applying a finish to the completed design.
Skill Level: Open to All – Any skill/knowledge level.
